My perfect storm taught me the importance of looking after myself. In moments of adversity, simple self-care has hugely boosted my capacity to cope.

It’s hard to believe this might be tricky for a coach who helps other people to have better habits for wellbeing but ‘self-care’ in its traditional sense has always been a challenge of mine. Having knowledge doesn’t always mean we can apply it to ourselves.

But I discovered how to put into practice good habits of self care. Remembering to fuel up nutritionally, simple things like rest, sleeping well, and simple acts of kindness towards myself, they have always been at the bottom of my list.

I learned to nurture my zest by resisting my desire to connect with people all the time. I discovered my extroverted and opportunistic tendencies to spring into action and go hell for leather can compromise my need to rest’ and be a human being not a human doing.

Health is the new wealth’ became my new mantra. Corny but true!

I also learned my keeping fit and building my physical fitness strengthened my mental fitness hugely. Who knew they were so completely connected? Exercise has always been a bit of a mental health strategy for me, but I never really make the connection!

Finally, I realised adventuring is essentially my ‘go to’ method of nurturing my zest!! Making time for beach fires, being in the outdoors, biking, getting fresh air, spending time under the stars, getting rosy cheeks and muddy feet is essentially my method of self-care.

My advice to you – Rest…Recharge and Reconnect!

The psychological benefits of having regular time in the outdoors will boost your endorphins, top up your vitamin D and leave you feeling fabulous.

Enjoy muddy feet and Rosy cheeks…Get outdoors!
