Case Study Example

Watch the video, to hear Polly’s story as an example….

Some people talk about life as a journey. Life’s journey can be smooth and calm and pleasant. You are in the driver’s seat, hands firmly on the steering wheel, in charge of your destiny. Coasting along on cruise control, great tunes playing on your radio, blue skies, shades on and feeling great. Life can be like this!

But things change unexpectedly and you don’t always see it coming!

Even when you have a destination you are headed for and a plan to take you there, things can change along the way.

A massive pothole can appear and put you at risk – If you are on a bike, this can be catastrophic! Or you can take a wrong turn and find you are lost, or the sun can get in your eyes and this makes it impossible to see right in front of you… that’s plain dangerous!

When I found myself in the middle of the storm, it was hard to see where I was going. Someone else changes lanes unexpectedly and you have to swerve without warning to avoid danger. Sometimes all you can do is slide into the skid, let go of the delusion of control and simply avoid becoming a casualty as best you can.

I didn’t end up in the path of oncoming traffic, or the hard shoulder. Initially I felt disoriented. I needed to decide where I wanted to go next. Suddenly I needed to take a new direction on my own and to find the road map to make it possible.

I had the opportunity to stop and reset my compass and make sure I knew where I was at. It was also time to look in my rear-view mirror to clarify where I had been, get clear on my current destination, and choose the direction I wanted to take next.

I had to get my binoculars out and polish the lens, focus on as much detail as I could, work out what my ‘best hopes’ were and what I wanted to see on my horizon.

As a girl who likes a plan, and likes to know what’s happening next, going NATO

(Not Attached To the Outcome) and trusting that things will work out can be a tricky thing to do.

Instead of getting too fixed in the details, I did something counterintuitive for me…

I’ve learned to be focused on the results but flexible on the journey. I decided to have blind faith, to trust the process and believe things happen for a reason. Learning to let go of the things you can’t completely control, letting things unfold organically for me has been a helpful thing to learn how to do.

I learned that life’s twists and turns bring creativity and can make us more interesting in lots of ways.

My advice to you – Reset your compass!

Right now, is as good a time as any to review where you have been, what you have made possible so you can go forward with pace, purpose and a plan.

Reflect on your progress and set some new commitments to work towards to make the best of the rest of the year ahead as you go forward.
